Fred Secome sings an old music-hall song at the election of a new bishop. Also appointed is a new curate, John Burton, whose wife is keen to establish relations with the community on the council estate. The Archdeacon, the Venerable Titus Philips, continues his vendetta against the vicar, to the annoyance of his wife. As Rural Dean, it is his responsibility to deal with the death of a priest involoved with drugs.John Burton does stirling work on the council estate. This prompts the vicar to begin more visiting in the parish. There he attracts first the attention of a young wife, and then the attention of her husband, who falsely accuses him of an affair.
